Born in Indonesia in 1898 and of Dutch descent, Klein settled in France in 1920 and exhibited his works at the Paris Salons d’Automne, the Tuileries, and the Salon des Independants.

Klein’s style was inspired by the Impressionists but was also reminiscent of Odilon Redon’s otherworldly, surrealist works. He was well known for his works depicted people at leisure, whether at the beach or at the circus, as well as his paintings of horses. Klein was also a theatre set and costume designer, and was instrumental in the decoration of the Pavillon de la Cote d’Azur at the Exposition Universelle in 1937. On his 80th birthday, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam had a retrospective of his work.

Klein was the father of celebrated artist, Yves Klein, and was married during his lifetime to two artists, Marie Raymond, mother of Yves, and later Ursula Bardsley.
