Born in 1961 in Washington D.C., Scott was encouraged by his mother from an early age to draw. His grandmothers, one a portrait painter and copyist at the National Gallery and the other a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art and an accomplished painter in a Norwegian decorative style known as rosemaling, also played important roles in Scott’s development as an artist.

Scott received his BFA from Principia College. During that time, he cites two pivotal experiences. The first was an oil painting class with James Schmidt, who had studied color under Josef Albers at Cranbrook Academy of Art. The second was an art history class where Scott was exposed to and impressed by Milton Avery, Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still.

After graduating from college, Scott’s father died unexpectedly. The following summer he attended the Vermont Studio School where he made totem-like sculptures of wood, steel and stone as a way of memorializing his father. Eventually, these figures became a theme in his paintings as well. Upon the passing of his mother, several years later, Scott began incorporating images of the flora and fauna from her work into his paintings. Recently, most of the recognizable imagery in Scott’s work has disappeared in favor of a deeper study of color and line.

Scott has shown in Maine, New England and in Northern California. Scott’s work is included in the collections of the Portland Museum of Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum, Bates College and several private collections.
