Born in Boston in 1843, noted marine and figurative painter William Edward Norton was inspired by the sea when he sailed on family-owned ships as a youth. Norton studied at the Lowell Institute in Boston and under the tutelage of master landscape painter George Inness. In the early 1870s, Norton traveled to Paris and studied with Chevreuse and Antoine Vollon and then settled in London where he exhibited extensively. 

Norton was a member of the Boston Art Club where he exhibited from 1873 to 1909. Norton also exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Academy in London, Paris Salons, 1893 Chicago Exposition, National Academy of Design, Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. and at the Art Institute of Chicago. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum of American Art, Essex Hall in Massachusetts and Portland Historical Society in Maine.
