A native of Paris, France, Joseph Morviller (1800-1870) received early training as a fresco painter and worked in both France and England. After settling in Boston in 1852, Morviller focused on painting his New England surroundings, particularly favoring the landscape in winter. He exhibited regularly at the Boston Athenaeum for over two decades and also contributed paintings to influential shows in New York, Philadelphia, Providence, and Chicago. Today, Morvillerís work is included in the collections of the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio.
