John Nichols Haapanen (b. 1891) was born in Niantic, Connecticut, but maintained a strong association with Boothbay Harbor, Maine as an artist and a teacher throughout his career. He studied under noted American artists Ernest Lee Major, Walter Francis Brown, and Anson K. Cross and was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Copley Society. In his painting, Haapanen focused primarily on landscapes and coastal scenes and today his works are included in the collections of Tufts University and Dean Academy.
