Born in Semarang, Indonesia in 1856, Dutch genre, landscape and animal painter Willem (Willy) Martens studied in Paris under historical and portrait painters Fernand Cormon and Léon Bonnat. Martens lived and worked in Nanterre, Paris and Amsterdam. He was Chairman of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague, a member of the Dutch Artist's Society, Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and Director of the Rijksmuseum from 1915 to 1924.

Martens' works are held in the permanent collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Van Gijn Museum in Dordrecht and the Royal Archives.
