Born in Ottawa, Canada in 1866, painter Elizabeth Annie McGillivray Knowles studied in Toronto under her future husband, Farquhar McGillivray Knowles. She later traveled and studied throughout Europe, Canada and in New York City.

Knowles was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, American Water Color Society, Pennsylvania Society of Miniature Painters, Brooklyn Society of Miniature Painters, Washington Water Color Club and the National League of American Pen Women. Knowles exhibited in a number of Canadian galleries as well as at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Ontario Society of Artists, Art Association of Montreal and in the Canadian National Exhibition.

Her work is held in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Museum London, Art Gallery of Ontario, Art Gallery of Hamilton and the Agnes Etherington Art Centre.
