A self-taught, marine painter, Hathaway was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1852. Beginning in 1887, he is listed as living and working in Portland, Maine, where he began to capture the land and seascapes of the surrounding area with his brush. Hathaway spent many summers painting on Peak’s Island in Casco Bay. He typically painted plein air scenes, translating the Casco Bay area onto his small painter’s boards or paper with a clean, concise and representative brushstroke.

Hathaway’s works can be found in the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine, the Kendall Whaling Museum, the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts and the Mariner’s Museum.
