Born in Florence, Italy in 1866, painter Florence Mackubin studied with Edwin Galea in Nice, at the Kunstlerinen Verein in Munich under Ludwig von Herterich and in Paris with Louis Deschamps, Julius Rolshoven and Jeanne Devina. Early in her career, Mackubin received 360 commissions for her “portraits in little” miniatures from notable women in New York, England, Boston, St. Louis, Washington D.C. and Baltimore. She was a member of the National Academy of Design and Vice President of the Baltimore Watercolor Club.

Mackubin exhibited at the Salon de Femmes Peintres in Paris, Tennessee Centennial Exposition, Royal Academy in London, National Academy of Design in New York, Columbian Exposition in Chicago and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Maryland State House, University of Virginia, John Hopkins University and at the Walters Art Museum in Maryland.
