Noted landscape painter and etcher, Chauncey Foster Ryder was born in Danbury, Connecticut and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Smith’s Art School, where he later became a teacher. In 1901, Ryder enrolled in the Academie Julian in Paris where he studied with Raphael Collin and Jean Paul Laurens. He exhibited genre scenes in the Paris Salon from 1903-1906, and painted in the port town of Etaples, France with other American artists.

Upon his return to the United States, Ryder settled in New York City, where his association with the prominent Macbeth Gallery began. In 1910, Ryder traveled throughout New England and purchased a house in Wilton, New Hampshire, where he spent many months each year painting the rural landscape. Ryder summered on Monhegan Island from 1920-27 and also painted in the Old Lyme, Connecticut colony.

Ryder was a member of the National Academy, Salmagundi Club, National Arts Club, Allied Artists of America, American Water Color Society, Chicago Society of Etchers and the New York Water Color Club, among others. His works are held in many important collections including at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Art Institute of Chicago.
