Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1936, artist Akos Szabo studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hungary under Janos Kmetty and Aurel Bernath. By 1960, Szabo and his contemporaries birthed the surnaturalism movement, known as magic realism. In 1965, he arrived and began exhibiting in Paris at the invitation of Kazimir Romanovicz, director of the Galerie Lambert.

Szabo has participated in more than one hundred solo and collective exhibitions, including at the Forras Galeria, Budapest; National Art Museum of China, Beijing; Sala Gaudi, Barcelona; Bienniale de la Jeune Peinture, Tokyo; Musee d’Art Moderne, Ceret; Museum of Modern Art, Budapest; Haras National, Saint-Lo; Ernst Museum, Budapest; Musee Marmottan, Paris; Galerie Lambert, Paris and in numerous Paris Salons. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest; Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest; Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville, Paris; Musee Joseph Dechelette, Roanne; Musee Hermes, Paris; Musee d’Art Moderne, Paris and Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Paris as well as in private collections in worldwide.
