Born in Madrid in 1850, realist painter and illustrator Domingo Muñoz y Cuesta studied at the University of San Fernando in Madrid under Francisco Domingo Marques. In 1877, Cuesta introduced his first painting at the ‘Exposicion National.' Cuesta began living in Rome in 1880, where he was influenced by Vicente Palmaroli and attracted widespread attention with his paintings of the War of Independence. In 1884, Cuesta moved to Paris and worked in the studio of Edouard Detaille where he became well known for his historical scenes and military subjects such as generals and soldiers. Cuesta exhibited at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Paris and National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Spain throughout his career.
